Today I will take the opportunity to give you a demonstration of our newly developed LANDRANI® Meatmasters “app” which we are very excited about. I will quickly explain to you how the application works and then at the very bottom there is a link to a Youtube video.
By the way, this application was already conceived and planned 3 years ago. But, like everything in life worth while, a lot of water had to go into the sea before we could get to it.
We decided from the beginning that we didn’t want to sell animals based only on how they looked. There is a lot of essential information needed when purchasing animals. Bloodline, fertility and growth potential are the most important elements of information to consider. Of course, fertility and growth are usually contradictory to each other, but a bonus if both are present.
In the industry, the only information that exists is that which SA Stud Book collects. However, this information is limited to stud animals and therefore there is no data recording system available for commercial animals.
The day I started sheep farming, the decision had already been made that I couldn’t do it without collecting data. As an accountant and systems analyst, my whole life consists of processing data on a daily basis, whether financial or statistical, and so there was no alternative for me to this decision.
Initially, the data collection strategy was to help me make decisions regarding the animals, but in time I realised that it will also play a big role when we start selling animals. We felt that we wanted to put prospective buyers in an unprecedented position when they buy animals from us.
We are only young breeders, so not all our animals are necessarily the best in the market. However, we believe that if a prospective buyer knows exactly what he is buying due to data, even an average animal with credible data poses a much lower risk than animals without any data.
The typical data we make available for each of our animals is as follows:
- Age
- Color
- Father
- Grandfather
- Multiple status of animal as well as that of Father and Mother
- Growth data
- Vaccination and Dosage Data
To date, we have not been able to find any system that can put a prospective buyer in the same position as our data and application will.
THE APPLICATION
The following “search” and/or “filter” options exist:
- Commercial or recorded at SA Stud Book
- Daughters or Sons according to Father
- Colors as well as combinations of colors
- Multiple status
- LANDRANI® Meatmasters Reproduction Award
With the above options, a prospective buyer can e.g. choose a ram and then all that ram’s daughters are displayed individually on the show.
Or if prospective buyers are interested in red eggs they can select the “Red” color option which will only show red eggs. The word “Red” can also be typed in the “Search bar” which will show all combinations of red ewes. For example “Red Most and White” or even “Red Painter” if there is.
We have a “Favourites” function which can be used to temporarily mark all the animals that catch the eye until a final decision can be made.
When the final decision is made, the animals are moved one by one to the “Basket” ready for the “Checkout” process. The “Checkout” is simple. We only accept EFT transfers which must be made within 72 hours of the order being finalised. Of course, an address must be filled in so that we know in which area the buyer lives so that transport can be coordinated. A transport provision of R350 plus VAT is charged at this stage. We will try our best to transport animals to their destinations as cost effectively as possible. Where transport is arranged cheaper the savings will be refunded to the buyer.
Buyers can also choose the “Self-collection” option which means we will have the animals ready according to agreed times.
In the case where the logistics make it impossible to deliver the animals OR the transport is just too expensive, the buyer can cancel the transaction without any costs or prejudice. We immediately refund the purchase price and transport provision to the buyer.
However, this will be the absolute last resort as it is important to us that there should be very little disappointment during the entire buying experience of an animal at LANDRANI® Meatmasters.
