Why Did We Buy Him?
Shadow is a Gunsmoke son bred by Dr. Johan Steyn of Ben Tson Meatmasters. Johan is also the founding member of Ramsem. On 10 August 2023, one of Johan’s rams achieved the highest price at the National Meatmaster Auction in Bloemfontein, R70,000. Therefore, Shadow was an easy choice to acquire to improve our genetics. At that stage, most of our ewes had Studbook Status A, meaning a Status B ram could be well utilized even on Status B ewes.
Why Are We Selling Him?
With almost 400 ewe lambs that Shadow has bred for us, and over time more and more of our animals are reaching Studbook Status C & SP. This means that Shadow can be used less and less. We have replaced him with El Toro, who will now have to prove himself along with our other showcase SP rams, namely Chief, Fat Judge, and Flash. Our IntelliFarm™ software allows us to maximize the use of these rams with minimal to no inbreeding risk.
General
Genetically, Shadow is very dominant. Almost all his lambs look almost exactly like him – Brown lambs with a white tip on the tail. Shadow can be recommended to improve any herd’s genetics, especially when it comes to his daughters.
